Carl E. Pickhardt Jr. was born in 1908 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He studied at Harvard and was later appointed Edward R Bacon Art Scholar there.He held teaching positions at the Worcester Museum School, the Fitchburg Art Museum, and the Sturbridge Art School. Pickhardt's extensive exhibition list includes: Art Institute of Chicago; Whitney Museum of American Art, 1936; National Academy, 1936; McDonald Gallery, New York,  

1937; Institute of Modern Art, Boston, 1939; and the National Academyof Design, where he received a prize in 1942. His work is represented by the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Art; Brooklyn Museum; Library of Congress, Addison Gallery of American Art; Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the Fogg Museum of Art in Cambridge, MA.
