A finely articulated impression on heavy tan wove paper, with wide margins (1 1/4 to 2 3/8 inches), in excellent condition.

From the only published edition in Pan, 1895, Volume 2. An early surrealist image depicting the philosopher hanging by a rope on an iceberg, trying to retrieve his lost glasses. The letters ‘SCEINS NESCIERIS’ etched in the snow, with two skulls, one incorporating a global map of the earth and the other with a map of the constellations.

The Pan Art Association was established in Berlin, Germany in the spring of 1894 for the purpose of publishing Pan, a richly illustrated international magazine, which featured contemporary art, literature and poetry. Pan was the first German journal to commission original works of art. During the magazine’s brief five year history (1895-1900) it published numerous etchings, lithographs and woodcuts by the world's leading graphic artists. The editions of approximately 1100 per issue, used fine papers and were produced to the highest printmaking standards.
